Is Coffee Good For You?

Is coffee good for you?  I have been asked this question so many times, and until a few years ago, I honestly didn’t know.  The primary reason I didn’t know was that I didn’t care, and I didn’t care because I didn’t drink it.

I remember the day well.

It was late September 2018 and Stacy and I were up visiting some old college teammates and friends in Minneapolis.  We had just left some beautiful 70s back home for some chilly 30s in Minnesota.  As we were sitting in their family room watching NCAA cross-country on television, my friend Nate asked us if we would like some coffee.

Seeing that we were about to go walk around downtown Minneapolis with that stiff, cold north wind, something hot sounded like a good idea.

So there it was.

My first cup of coffee since high school.  Which, led to my second cup from McDonald’s the following day during the drive back home.

It was at this point that the “Is coffee good for you” question became relevant to me.

Now I have been in countless seminars where someone inevitably would ask the presenter this same question, and it always seemed as though their answer would depend on whether or not they drank coffee.

Basically, if they were coffee drinkers, then yes, coffee was indeed good for them.  If not, then it probably wasn’t the best choice.

However, there was this particular coffee I kept hearing referenced by medical doctors, researchers, and various other health practitioners on my podcast feeds that was different.  In fact, it kept coming up over and over again.

I distinctly remembered one saying “Yes, coffee is wonderful for you as long as it’s something like Purity Coffee.”

So I looked into it.

My thinking was, if was going to start a new habit and I didn’t already have any preconceived notions, I’d be foolish not to find the best coffee on the market that can add value to my life in terms of enhancing my health.  As opposed to starting something new that could be detrimental to my health, or at best have no effect at all.

So is coffee good for you?  And in particular, what makes Purity Coffee so special?

Here’s some of what I learned:

Coffee is loaded with antioxidants

Antioxidants are natural defense mechanisms against free radicals that can cause damage to genes, accelerate aging, and even lead to cancer and other diseases.  Most importantly, as you’ll soon find out, it appears as though they are primary determinants of what makes coffee so health-promoting.

This is a large part of what makes Purity Coffee special.  It’s crafted with optimal health in mind.  What this means is that they produce and roast it in a fashion to maintain the highest antioxidant levels possible, while minimizing the compounds you don’t want.  Most commercial coffees over-roast their beans to make up for the use of substandard beans, both in terms of quality and taste.

Using independent testing, Purity Coffee was found to be on average 65% higher in antioxidants than all of the other organic coffees tested, while also being free of pesticides, mold, and mycotoxins.

Coffee is a commodity crop and it’s grown to maximize yield, sprayed with pesticides, and stored in a way that encourages mold growth and oxidation.  Over 97% of the world’s coffee is considered “commercial coffee” and fits into this bucket, seriously compromising the health-promoting value of the coffee.

If you’re health conscious like me, it’s important to note that commercial coffee is one of the most heavily chemically treated crops in the world.  Something to seriously consider if it’s one of your daily staples.

Great for liver health

Studies range from reports on coffee reducing the risk of cirrhosis and liver cancer to demonstrating evidence of effectiveness across the entire spectrum of liver diseases.  Here’s a systematic review that looked at 12 studies and over 93,000 subjects, all of which showed positive health benefits of coffee on the liver.

Improves brain function

If you drink coffee you probably already have this figured out, but here’s some research confirming coffee’s positive effects on mood, memory, energy levels, reaction time, and other markers of general mental performance.

It’s important to note here that if you don’t do caffeine, decaffeinated coffee has also been shown to support neurological health as well.

Enhances fat-burning, metabolism, and athletic performance

When you drink coffee, the caffeine stimulates an increase in epinephrine which helps to oxidize (break down) fat and release it into the bloodstream to be used for energy.  This can be particularly useful when hitting the gym.  It turns out these freed-up fatty acids increase the energy available to your muscles so you can go longer and harder than without it.

And just for good measure, the caffeine in coffee has been shown to boost the metabolic rate by as much as 29%.

Good for the gut

By now you’ve probably heard about the importance of taking care of your gut health and gut microbiome, as this is where the majority of your immune system resides.  It is thought that the polyphenols in coffee provide digestive support and microbiota balance.

You may live longer

Saving the best for last, your morning cup of coffee just might add years to your life.  Several studies associate the regular consumption of coffee with a lower risk of premature death and a longer lifespan than those who don’t drink coffee.

Once again, antioxidants and polyphenols – perhaps specifically the chlorogenic acid (CGA) found in coffee are thought to fight the oxidative stress associated with aging and other causes of early death.

The really cool thing is, what I just gave you is only a brief summary of what coffee has to offer from a health standpoint.  There are thousands of studies backing up the fact that YES, coffee is good for you.

Just over four years ago at the age of 42, I became a coffee drinker.  Kind of strange I know.  But I acquired a quick taste for it, and once I learned of the many health benefits, it became a no-brainer.

It might also surprise you to know that I have never bought anything other than Purity Coffee for home consumption.  After learning about just how intentional they are in producing the healthiest cup of coffee in the world, it’s been delivered to our doorstep ever since.

Finally, after about one solid year of drinking Purity Coffee, my wife and I were so impressed not only with the health benefits but the overall taste of the coffee and the values of the company as a whole, that I personally reached out to them.

As a result, they graciously offered me the ability to share it with my family, friends, and clients at a 20% discount.  If you’d like to try it for yourself, please head over to Purity Coffee and just enter SCOTT20 in the discount code box.
